Blues on Grand Tonight: Friday July 7th

Friday
July 7
9:30PM

Joanna Connor
$10
The Chicago Sun Times called her “a powerhouse guitarist with a sense of rock dynamics – her playing has a fire that is free of self-indulgence”.

“From the root to the fruit, from the seed to the flower,” Joanna Connor presents an intense, high-energy, rhythmic, virtuostic, guitar-driven musical experience. Pushing the envelope of the blues by combining funk, rock and world beat, audiences are compelled to get on their feet. Joanna’s soulful voice and guitar mastery has received accolades from publications such as Guitar Player, Guitar World, The Village Voice, Playboy Magazine, Billboard, Downbeat, Relix, and most major newspapers. She has shared the stage and toured with Jimmy Page, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Robert Cray, Poi Dog Pondering, Luther and Bernard Allison, Albert Collins, and Los Lobos.

Iowa Fringe Festival – Calling all volunteers

It’s coming up soon: July 20 – 23, and we need volunteers! Last year we had 5 venues and this year we’re up to 9 venues with 24 companies from LA, Minneapolis, Canada, Omaha, Wisconin and from all over Iowa. Don’t miss your chance to see live, edgy theatre! For every shift you work (around 3 hrs/shift), you will get one free ticket to any Fringe show.

WHAT:
The Iowa Fringe Festival, a four-day celebration of theatre and performing arts in downtown Des Moines. This is your chance to see a variety of new, “edgy,” offbeat or untried theater pieces from local, regional, and national theatre groups, performing simultaneously in multiple venues each evening. It’s theatre at a whirlwind pace, in an exciting, carnival atmosphere.

WHEN:
Shifts are available…

Thursday, July 20, between 5:30 pm and 10:30 pm.
Friday, July 21, between 5:30 pm and midnight.
Saturday, July 22, between 1:00 pm and midnight.
Sunday, July 23, between 1:00 pm and 6 pm.

WHERE:
All the venues will be in downtown Des Moines, around the Gateway West area. They include the new Central Library, The John Pappajohn Center, the Verboten Gallery and the Fitch Gallery, to name a few.

HOW:
E-mail
if2volunteer@gmail.com with whether you’d like to help with tech (running a simple light board), box office or ticket taking and which days/times work best for you. You can expect what your particular assignment is in July.

For more information, go to www.iowafringe.com.

48 Hour Film Project – July 28 & 29

 http://www.myspace.com/desmoines48

The 48 Hour Film Project comes to Des Moines on the weekend of July 28. Filmmakers from all over the Des Moines area will compete to see who can make the best short film in only 48 hours. The winning film will go up against films from around the world. Enter today! Space is limited.

This year, teams will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Once the initial registration is complete, we will accept teams for the Waiting List. If a registered team must drop out, we will go to the Waiting List. If there is enough interest, and we can secure additional theater time, we may be able to add more teams from the list.
