Artist Statement: Western society has long created icons of popular culture, though today we worship idols of beauty and fame in a frenzied state of glorification. What inspires my work is why we choose to have icons at all. As a culture, I feel we are insecure and feed upon the glorification of others. This kind of worship is rooted in an age when people found solace in the spiritual authority of saints. Ordinary people could never be as pious as the deities so they worshipped the figures as a way of escaping the idea that they were not good enough.
I believe the nature of this insecurity is embedded into our consciousness, and finds itself renewed in our attitudes towards beauty. We have, as represented in fashion magazines, found images to idolize that are as unobtainable as the saints we once worshipped. The women we deem models, the figures we accept as the epitome of human beauty and perfection, are most often so strange looking that sometimes we barely resemble the same species. They are either androgynous, wide-eyed, fish-lipped, or the walking dead. A magazine ad using one of these figures to sell something directly announces that this IS what we want to look at, what we worship, and it will make us buy whatever it is. We have created the market that seems so impossibly unreal.
Making use of these ideas in my work, I try to draw images that are both seductive and deceptively iconic. I want the image to bring light to what it would mean to be a glorified icon, a shell of a real human being. I also intend to consider what we deem beautiful. Investigating the demands of a greater society upon an idol, I want my figures to convey the strange double-edged sword of being wanted, even by the enamored and dedicated hand that drew them.

Playboy Enterprises in collaboration with The Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh) invited over 20 contemporary and street artists to reinterpret the iconic Playboy Bunny in celebration of the opening of the first Playboy Club in Chicago 50 years ago in 1960. Known at that time for her satin bunny suit, cotton tail and rabbit ears, the Playboy Bunny served cocktails and glamour in equal doses. Many luminaries once worked as Bunnies, including Deborah Harry, Gloria Steinem and Lauren Hutton. For Playboy Redux: Contemporary Artists Interpret the Iconic Playboy Bunny, artists were asked to create a new look for the Bunny, a veritable makeover to create the Bunny of the future. The selected artists have presented a number of new takes on this iconic image, and works ranges range in medium including photography, painting, sculpture, drawing and video.
Playboy Redux was originally shown at The Warhol Museum in March-June, 2010. Rotofugi Gallery is proud to now exhibit and sell these works along with some new additions.
This project is part of Playboy’s year-long 50th Anniversary celebration of the Playboy Cluband Playboy Bunny. The exhibit is curated by Aaron Baker, Ned West and Rotofugi Gallery.

Catch Van Holmgren at the Resident Artists mural show this month up at the Instinct Gallery (1408 Locust in downtown Des Moines at the Des Moines Social Club). He’s also been showing at the Rogue Buddha Gallery in Minneapolis, MN and The Innovate Love Project in Baltimore, Maryland. Working with found wood and stencils he experiments with the playfulness of humans and animals. The colors are sharp, the ideas are there, and the viewer can just have a good time looking at Van’s work. A lot of the subjects in his work are about the juxtaposition of figures, words and places. It tends to let the viewer decide their own story.
You can also see Van’s work at an upcoming show at Ephemera in the East Village of Des Moines during the month of September called “People of the Snakes” that feature original paintings and limited edition screen prints. Van also does a lot of commissions and live painting at events.
